At 12 weeks, your baby has reached a major developmental milestone! This marks the end of the first trimester, and by now, your baby is growing rapidly and looking more like a tiny human. Measuring around 2.5 inches long—about the size of a plum—and weighing close to half an ounce, your little one is making big strides in development.

Facial Features Take Shape

Your baby’s face is becoming more defined, with eyes that have moved closer together and ears that are settling into place. Their tiny nose and chin are forming, and they even can open and close their mouth!

Reflexes Are Kicking In

Around 12 weeks, your baby starts developing reflexes. They may begin to suck their thumb, move their fingers, and even make tiny facial expressions! Though you won’t feel it just yet, they are also wiggling around in the amniotic sac.

Vital Organs Are Functioning

Your baby’s organs, including the kidneys, intestines, liver, and brain, are all in place and beginning to function. The digestive system is practicing contractions, and the liver is producing red blood cells.

Fingernails, Toenails, and Hair

Tiny fingernails and toenails are forming, and soft, fine hair called lanugo is developing, which will help keep your baby warm in the womb.

Heartbeat is Strong

One of the most exciting parts of being 12 weeks pregnant is that your baby’s heartbeat is now strong enough to be detected by a Doppler device at a doctor’s visit. It beats at an incredible rate—around 120-160 beats per minute!

At 12 weeks, the risk of miscarriage significantly decreases, and many parents feel ready to share the exciting news. As your second trimester approaches, you may start feeling more energized and less nauseous. Keep taking care of yourself, staying hydrated, and getting the nutrients both you and your baby need!

Every week brings new growth, and before you know it, you’ll be feeling those tiny kicks and flutters.
