At 20 weeks, you’ve reached the halfway point of your pregnancy—congratulations! Your baby is growing rapidly and developing key features that will continue to refine in the coming weeks. At this stage, your little one is about the size of a banana, measuring around 6.5 inches from crown to rump and weighing approximately 10 ounces.
Movement You Can Feel
By now, you may have felt those first little kicks, rolls, or flutters. Your baby is becoming more active, stretching and moving around inside the womb. These tiny movements will grow stronger as the weeks go by!
Developing Senses
Your baby’s senses are becoming more refined. Their hearing is improving, and they may even start responding to familiar voices or loud sounds. Taste buds are also forming, and they can swallow small amounts of amniotic fluid, which helps develop their digestive system.
Fine-Tuning Features
Facial features are becoming more defined, with eyebrows, eyelashes, and even hair growing in. Their skin is still thin but is now covered in vernix caseosa, a waxy coating that protects the skin from the amniotic fluid.
Organ Growth and Function
The brain is actively developing, sending signals to help coordinate movement. The kidneys are functioning, producing urine that is released into the amniotic fluid. The heart is beating strong and can now be heard clearly with a stethoscope or ultrasound.
The 20-Week Ultrasound
Around 20 weeks, many parents have the anatomy scan, a detailed ultrasound that checks the baby’s growth and development. This scan also allows you to find out the gender if you choose!
At 20 weeks, you’re well into your pregnancy journey, and your baby is growing stronger each day. As your belly expands, you might start experiencing new symptoms like backaches and increased appetite. Stay hydrated, eat nutritious foods, and take time to enjoy this exciting stage—you’re halfway there!
