At 6 weeks pregnant, your baby is growing rapidly, even though they are still very tiny—about the size of a lentil! This is a crucial stage of development, as major organs and body systems begin to form. Here’s what’s happening with your little one at this exciting time:

Heart Begins to Beat

One of the biggest milestones at 6 weeks is the baby’s heartbeat! While it may not always be detectable on an ultrasound this early, the heart is already forming and starting to beat at around 100-160 beats per minute—much faster than an adult’s heartbeat.

Brain and Nervous System Development

Your baby’s brain is growing rapidly, with the neural tube (which will become the brain and spinal cord) closing. This early brain activity is the foundation for future movement, learning, and growth.

Tiny Limb Buds Appear

Although they still look more like little paddles than arms and legs, tiny limb buds are beginning to develop. These will eventually grow into fully-formed arms and legs in the coming weeks.

Facial Features Start to Take Shape

Your baby’s face is beginning to form, with small dark spots indicating where the eyes will be. Tiny indentations are also appearing, which will later become the nose, ears, and mouth.

Other Organs Are Developing

At 6 weeks, vital organs like the liver, kidneys, and lungs are beginning to take shape. Though they won’t be fully functional for a while, their development is well underway.

Growth in Size

Your baby is still incredibly small—measuring about 1/4 inch (4-7 mm) long. While that might seem tiny, they are growing at a rapid pace and will nearly double in size by next week!

What You May Experience

Many moms-to-be start feeling early pregnancy symptoms around 6 weeks, including nausea, fatigue, and breast tenderness. While every pregnancy is different, these are common signs that your body is working hard to support your growing baby.

Looking Ahead

In just a few more weeks, your baby will develop more defined features, and their movements will become more noticeable on an ultrasound. The first trimester is full of amazing growth, and 6 weeks marks an important stage in your little one’s journey!

If you have any questions or concerns about your baby’s development, be sure to check in with your healthcare provider. They can provide reassurance and ensure everything is progressing smoothly.
