At 39 weeks, your baby is considered full-term and is likely ready to meet the world at any moment! At this stage, your baby typically weighs between 6.5 to 8 pounds and measures around 19 to 21 inches long.

While every baby grows at their own pace, most of the major development is complete—your baby’s organs are fully formed, and their brain and lungs are continuing to mature, even in these final days.

Your baby’s skin is now smooth, and no longer covered in lanugo (the soft downy hair) or vernix (a protective waxy coating), though traces may remain. Fat stores have built up under the skin, helping your baby regulate body temperature after birth.

Movements might feel a bit more cramped, but you’ll likely still notice shifts and wiggles as your baby gets into position for delivery—usually head-down to prepare for birth.

Internally, your baby’s digestive system is ready to handle milk, though it won’t start functioning fully until after birth. Reflexes like sucking and grasping are strong, and your baby is likely practicing both inside the womb.

It’s an exciting time as your body prepares for labor and your baby prepares to take their first breath. Every pregnancy is unique, so be sure to check in with your healthcare provider about what’s normal for you as you near delivery. While 39 weeks is considered full term, some women can safely go as long as 42 weeks before delivery.
