At 36 weeks, your baby is nearly ready to meet the world! By now, they weigh about 5.5 to 6 pounds and are around 18 to 19 inches long—roughly the size of a bunch of Swiss chard. Most of your baby’s physical development is complete, and they’re simply continuing to grow and gain healthy baby fat, which helps regulate body temperature after birth.
Inside the womb, your baby’s organs are maturing, especially the lungs and brain. The digestive system is fully formed, though it won’t fully kick into action until after birth when your baby feeds. Their skin is smooth and soft now, and the fine hair (called lanugo) that once covered their body is mostly gone.
Your baby may already be in a head-down position, preparing for delivery. They’re settling into your pelvis, which can ease pressure on your ribs but increase pressure on your bladder. You might feel more kicks and stretches than hard punches, as your little one has less room to move around.
Your baby’s hearing is fully developed, and they may recognize familiar voices and even soothing music. They’re also practicing blinking, breathing, and sucking—skills they’ll need from the moment they arrive.
With just a few weeks to go, every day counts in your baby’s final development. It’s an exciting and emotional time as the finish line gets closer. Be sure to reach out to your healthcare provider with any questions or concerns about your baby’s growth, and get ready—your little one will be in your arms before you know it!
