Choosing Love, Finding Strength: A Mother’s Story from Mary’s Refuge
Every mother’s journey begins with a moment of choice—a moment of courage. For one young mom at Mary’s Refuge, that moment came early, and her conviction was clear. When asked why she chose life for her baby, she shared honestly, “I personally couldn’t give up something my body is already putting together.” She had always promised herself that if she ever became pregnant, she would go to term—whether that meant parenting or choosing adoption. But once her son became real to her, the decision came naturally. “I chose to keep and raise my child, Jelani,” she said with a quiet confidence.
Motherhood, she explained, is far more than a title—it’s a calling. “Being a mother means you are providing comfort, safety, and care for your child,” she said. To her, it means stepping in front of what might harm them, teaching them values, and preparing them for the world. It means standing beside them through failure and cheering them on through success. And above all, she added, motherhood is about “unconditional love they can only get from a mother.”
Her journey began young—pregnant at 19, navigating challenges that would overwhelm anyone. She was working, paying bills, and trying to stay afloat when her pregnancy progressed and her employer let her go. Suddenly she was facing her last trimester with no job, no income, and nowhere stable to go.
That’s when Mary’s Refuge stepped in.
“When I had Jelani I was at Mary’s Refuge, and their help helped a lot,” she shared. With stability and support, she was able to focus on her baby and her future. That support became a turning point. “Being a mom changed the way I look at things,” she said. Instead of feeling stuck, she found hope—and direction.
Today, she’s thriving. She’s enrolled in college—something she credits directly to the encouragement she found here. She earned her permit and is working toward her driver’s license. She’s building a foundation, step by step, for the life she wants for herself and her son.
And when asked how Mary’s Refuge changed her life, her answer was simple and heartfelt: “I don’t know where I’d be without Mary’s Refuge. Thank you!”
Her story is a testament to courage, love, and the power of support at the right moment. It reminds us that when a mother is given a safe place to land, she can rise—higher and stronger than she ever imagined.
