Martinsburg, WV — Mary’s Refuge is proud to announce the development of a new Fatherhood Program designed to support and equip fathers of children connected to the maternity home’s mission. This initiative marks an important expansion in services, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to strengthening the entire family unit.

Since opening its doors in 2023, Mary’s Refuge has provided safe housing, education, and life-skills support for expectant mothers and mothers with young children. While men are not permitted to live or participate in programming on-site, many of the mothers served are actively co-parenting. Recognizing this need, Mary’s Refuge is creating a separate, dedicated space where fathers can be engaged, encouraged, and equipped for their vital role.

Our mission has always been about building strong families,” said Allison Ferrell, Executive Director of Mary’s Refuge. “When fathers are supported and empowered, children thrive. This program allows us to walk alongside men who want to be present, responsible, and actively involved in their child’s life.”

The Fatherhood Program will provide mentorship, parenting education, job readiness support, and life-skills training. Through structured guidance and accountability, fathers will gain practical tools to communicate effectively, provide stability, and develop healthy co-parenting relationships. The ultimate goal is stronger family bonds and better long-term outcomes for both mother and baby.

To bring this vision to life, Mary’s Refuge has recently acquired a nearby property that will be renovated specifically to house the Fatherhood Program. The space will offer classrooms, meeting areas, and mentorship opportunities designed to foster growth and personal responsibility in a supportive environment.

Funding for renovations and program launch efforts will be supported in part by proceeds from the organization’s upcoming Golf Tournament. Community members, sponsors, and participants will play a direct role in helping establish this new initiative.

“This is about creating opportunity,” Ferrell added. “We want fathers to have a place where they can learn, grow, and step confidently into responsible parenthood. When we invest in fathers, we invest in the future of families.”

The Fatherhood Program represents the next chapter of Mary’s Refuge’s expanding impact in the Eastern Panhandle—building not only safe homes for mothers and babies, but also strong foundations for families.
